On Monday March 10, Bram Keymolen, Compliance Director at eyetec, will have the honor to present at the PDA Visual Inspection Forum in Raleigh, NC. His session, “Case Studies: Increasing Manual Visual Inspection Detection Probability for Difficult-to-Inspect Products,” will give an in-depth look at methods to improve manual inspection processes.

Key insights from the presentation

Bram's presentation will focus on practical approaches to improve the detection probability in Manual Visual Inspection (MVI) for products that are difficult to inspect, the so-called DIPs.

The presentation will cover:

  • The regulatory foundation for Manual Visual Inspection (MVI), including USP 790 requirements.

  • Key factors influencing the Probability of Detection (PoD), such as container type, product characteristics, and inspection conditions.

  • Practical, non-destructive improvements based on PDA Technical Report 79, including magnification, dwell time, and the use of polarized light.

  • Real-world case studies demonstrating how these improvements impacted PoD for particle detection in transparent and opaque vials.

  • Common pitfalls during PoD studies, such as operator dependency and maintaining test set quality.

The importance of PoD studies

Probability of Detection (PoD) studies are important to evaluate and demonstrate the effectiveness of Manual Visual Inspection methods and identifying potential Difficult to Inspect products. My presentation will detail how method improvements, combined with critical data analysis, can enhance inspection accuracy while reducing reliance on destructive testing.
